Eighty three runners made it across the finish line of the grueling 135-mile race.
After enduring miles of long, steep climbs and a hot, cloudless sky, two new faces stood atop the podium at the end of the 2014 AdventureCORPS Badwater 135. Harvey Lewis, 38, of Cincinnati, finished first for the men in 23 hours, 52 minutes and 55 seconds. Alyson Venti, 32, of Miami, was the first female finisher and eighth overall in 28:37:28. The new route featured more than 17,000 feet of climbing and 12,700 feet of descending over three major climbs.
Many racers who ran faster than their projected times early in the race suffered in the later climbs and hot temperatures made it imperative for all runners to stay on top of their nutrition and hydration. A total of 97 runners from 24 states and 25 countries began their journey in Lone Pine, Calif., on Monday morning and 83 made it across the finish line at Whitney Portal 135 miles later. As a whole, racers were complimentary of the new course, although many lamented the missed opportunity to run through the even more intense heat of Death Valley.
