Simple Palate: Taste Test: Frozen Whole Grain Waffles

By Cielestia Calbay

If you’re pressed for time but crave waffles after a hard workout or race, a quick and easy frozen version sounds like a good alternative. But there’s a little more to think about when turning to that warm and fast whole grain solution. Here’s what to look for when choosing a frozen whole grain waffle, as well as a roundup of brands that passed the taste test:

– Make sure the first ingredient has the word “whole” in it, like whole wheat flour or whole oats. Avoid anything that sounds like unbleached wheat flour or cracked wheat.

– Each two-waffle serving shouldn’t have more than seven grams of sugar, 350mg of sodium, at least three grams of fiber, and absolutely no trans or hydrogenated oils.
