Fuel of the Week: Peaches
Runnin’ in the country, gonna eat a lot of peaches.
Runnin’ in the country, gonna eat a lot of peaches.
Whether or not you’re a fan of the band The Presidents of the United States of America, you should be a fan of peaches.
These seasonal, sweet and juicy gems are at their peak right now. Nutritionist Lauren Antonucci of New York City’s Nutrition Energy says, “I love them ‘as is’ for an anytime snack, or puréed in my blender (lightly on pulse) then used as a fruit purée topping for anything from oatmeal to chicken to ice cream. I also love to grill them and serve them for dessert!”
Antonucci adds that peaches are great for runners because they are “hydrating and contain potassium … and vitamin C. Peaches are high in phenolic compounds, antioxidant capacity that may help prevent oxidative damage, heart disease and some cancers. Plus they have a high ORAC score—a measure of total antioxidant activity.”
Sing along: “If I had my little way, I’d eat peaches every day.”
