Fuel Buzz: UnTapped Maple Syrup

Organic maple syrup as an energy gel? We put it to the test.

Untapped Slopeside Syrup consists of nothing but 100 percent natural maple syrup from Vermont.

Looking for a new energy boost on the run? In recent years, products made with natural ingredients have been on the rise, although most are still highly processed formulations and many contain maltodextrin. But newly released UnTapped Slopeside Syrup is as natural and clean as an energy boost can be: It’s simply made from 100 percent pure, certified-organic Vermont maple syrup. That might sound slightly bizarre compared to typical energy gels, but we took it on some trial runs and we loved it. It’s very tasty and it has a very fluid viscosity that doesn’t leave an overly sticky residue. It’s the latest creation from a maple syrup company founded by four cousins on the family’s ski area in Richmond, Vt. They teamed up with pro cyclist Ted King to launch UnTapped (with help from a successful round of crowd-sourced funding) in portable 0.96-oz. packets similar to energy gels. Each packet serves up 100 calories with 26g of carbs (sugar), 5mg of sodium, 80mg of potassium with trace amounts of manganese, riboflavin, calcium, magnesium and zinc too. The packets will be sold at retail stores and online at untapped.cc, starting at $9.95 for five packets.
