Fuel Buzz: The Portable Protein Shake
A product that tries to take the hassle out of consuming protein.
This new pouch-like packaging could make your pre or post-run fueling that much easier and faster.
About a month ago, Luminate Nutrition, a Massachusetts-based company, launched their latest brand and product called Zig, a portable whey protein shake. The idea is simple: 20 grams of whey protein in a portable pouch with an inner mixing mesh so all you need to do is fill it up to the 6-ounce water mark, shake and then drink it.
The unique packaging is designed for the “on-the-go” athlete that can fuel anywhere (with a water source) and anytime without taking the extra time to measure out protein powder or lug around its container.
For runners, consuming whey protein, post-long run especially, helps to convert fat burned into lean muscle mass and growth. It’s also a good source of essential amino acids. The pre-measured amount of 20 grams of whey protein in the pouch is perfect for consumption before or after an hour-long run.
Our editors had a go at the vanilla-flavored Zig protein pouch and found that the consistency was thicker than usual with 6 ounces of water, but smooth and without clumps. The intuitive handheld design also makes it easy to take on a 6-mile run and fill-up at a nearby water fountain.
Zig portable protein pouches are sold in packs of six for $18 in chocolate or vanilla flavors, and can be purchased at Zigdrink.com.
