Fuel Buzz: Powdered Peanut Butter

A different way to consume peanut butter.

Peanut butter lovers looking for a healthier alternative will likely find this product on many grocery store shelves.

Powdered peanut butter is made by pressing peanuts to remove the oil and fat, thus creating a powder that has less fat and fewer calories than the traditional peanut butter.

So how do you use powdered peanut butter? Well, you can add water and turn it into a spread that imitates the peanut butter you know and love. Or, you can add the powder to protein shakes and smoothies, or to foods that already have a creamy base, like yogurt.

The industry leaders in powdered peanut butter are PB2 and Just Great Stuff. We tried Just Great Stuff in a variety of uses, both as a spread and in a smoothie. The peanut butter taste was undeniable, though the spread texture is slightly off from traditional peanut butter.

Pros: Minimal ingredients (organic peanuts, organic coconut sugar, sea salt); good taste. Fewer calories than traditional peanut butter.

Cons: The price (a jar costs $8.54) could be a deal-breaker. The near-perfect texture of traditional peanut butter is hard to duplicate as a spread.
