First Taste: Picky Bars’ ‘Ah, Fudge Nuts!’

There are fewer things in this world that go better together than fudge and brownies.

There are fewer things in this world that go better together than fudge and brownies, so it should come as no surprise that Picky Bars’ newest flavor—Ah, Fudge Nuts!—is a home run.

The company recently announced the latest addition to their growing lineup, and on a recent trip to Bend, Ore., I was fortunate enough to swing by Picky HQ and snag a few samples to take home with me.

Made with a single origin, minimally processed cacao powder from Holy Kakow, the bar tastes like a fresh soft brownie with nuts. It’s very chocolaty, and that’s not a bad thing.

Like the other six bars in the Picky lineup, Ah, Fudge Nuts! maintains a 4:1 carb-to-protein ratio and is gluten, dairy and soy-free. According to co-founder Lauren Fleshman, 8 different types of cocoas and cacaos were used in the process of dialing in the recipe before settling on Holy Kakow, a local supplier.

Ah, Fudge Nuts! checks in at 200 calories with 28 grams of carbohydrates, 8 grams of good fat and 7 grams of protein. In addition to cacao powder, it also includes dates, peanuts, agave nectar, crispy brown rice cereal, rice protein, chocolate chips and sunflower oil.

“It is our decadent dessert bar,” says Angela Shatting, marketing manager for Picky Bars. “But it’s something you can reach for and feel better about.”

And while it’s certainly decadent and makes for a good mid-morning or afternoon snack (I suggest warming it in the microwave for 15 seconds and pairing it with a cup of coffee), it’s easy on the stomach and packed with enough energy to fuel you through long workouts and races. In fact, I had one as part of my breakfast before the Boston Marathon on April 20, had no issues with digestion on race morning and went on to run a good race, so take from that what you will.

Ah, Fudge Nuts! will be available May 1 to Picky Club members and hits retail stores on June 1.
