Spring is notorious for surprise weather changes, so be prepared for anything.

Spring is notorious for surprise weather changes, so be prepared for anything.

Brighter days, rising temperatures and cool breezes can only mean one thing: spring is finally here. And as the season changes, so will your running wardrobe. But don’t put away your winter gear just yet, as there are a few key pieces you’ll want to hang on to for the new weather. In the carousel on the top left of this page are five of our picks for spring running gear, and below we share tips on how to get the most mileage out of items you may already own to transition between seasons.

1. Invest in an all-weather, packable jacket.

Don’t expect scorching, dry weather just yet. Spring is notorious for surprise weather changes, so be prepared in case your runs start to get a little wet. A light, water-resistant jacket made from performance microfibers and polyester wicks away sweat while still providing protection against the rain to keep you dry and comfortable. Look for a jacket that can be easily folded and packed away in case it starts to get warmer. Suggestion: Nike Hurricane Vapor Jacket, $115 (photo at top left)

2. Layers are still recommended, but remove the second insulating layer once used for warmth.

A singlet or technical tee may be all you need depending on your neck of the woods, but two layers is best in case the temperature changes. Suggestion: The North Face Better Than Naked Cool Singlet, $45

3. Shield yourself from the sun’s glares

Protecting your eyes from the sun is important no matter how cold or warm it is. To find a secure fit, pay attention to the frames’ lens diameter, bridge and temple. Rimless frames increases peripheral vision while transitional lenses lighten and darken in response to light conditions. Suggestion: Smith Optics Interlock Spoiler, $139

4. Protect your skin

Studies suggest nearly 90 percent of all skin cancers are caused by exposure to ultraviolent light and radiation. Combat the sun’s harmful UV rays with a sweatproof sunblock that will protect your skin even as you accumulate moisture. Dermatologists recommend SPF 30. Suggestion: Epicuren Sport Sunscreen SPF 30, $34

5. Cap it off

A running cap or visor protects your face from the glaring sun and protects your head from misty conditions. Find a hat made with technical fabrics to regulate your temperature and wick away sweat. Also, lighter colors tend to keep your head cool on warm days. Suggestion: adidas adiZero Crazy Light Cap, $22
