Shoe Of The Week: Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 31

Nike completely revamped the 31st version of one of its most iconic shoes.

More than 16,000 wear-test miles helped Nike went into the development of this shoe.

Nike officially unveiled the 31st edition of its Pegasus training shoe on May 30 in Eugene, Ore., as part of the festivities leading up to the Prefontaine Classic track meet. The new version of the Pegasus, which hit stores on June 1, has been entirely retooled, with a new outsole, midsole and upper.

The biggest highlights of the Peg 31 are the livelier and slightly lower-to-the-ground feeling it has, thanks in part to a 10mm heel-toe drop (previous versions of the Pegasus had 12mm heel-toe drops) and the responsive Air Zoom midsole component in the heel. The upper is minimally designed and aimed at being flexible and somewhat form-fitting. The shoe provides a locked down fit in the heel, but is slightly wider than most shoes in the midfoot and forefoot, which means it can accommodate a range of foot shapes.

Nike said it had runners put more than 16,000 wear-test miles on the shoe during the development stages and also included design input from double Olympic gold medalist Mo Farah. Competitor has been wear-testing the shoe for the past month and so far testers have reported it’s a lightweight, energetic, all-around training shoe for everyday use, one suitable for both long distance and faster workouts.
