Shoe of the Week: ASICS GEL-Nimbus 17

The Nimbus 17 is one of ASICS’ top neutral legacy shoes and it has developed quite a following over the past two decades, partially because it has mostly undergone subtle alterations through the years. Ironically, though, the 17 has undergone big changes, having been upgraded with a new, almost-seamless engineered mesh upper that really snugs the foot down to the undercarriage. It’s never been a light-and-fast shoe (more of a plushly cushioned high-mileage trainer), however, this version is almost an ounce lighter thanks to an enhanced midsole that includes two layers of lightweight foam and more Gel cushioning than previous models. (The women’s version has a slightly higher heel and wider forefoot too.) The Nimbus is still a long-distance workhorse, but it serves up a lighter, cushier and more agile ride than ever before.
