In the spirit of ushering in a new era of at-home fitness, Microsoft Corp. and Nike have unveiled “Nike+ Kinect Training,” a personalized training experience available only on Kinect for the Xbox 360 console in which users can tap into their inner elite athletes using expertise from Nike’s best trainers.

The two fitness powerhouses announced the partnership yesterday at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles where they discussed the custom training program rooted in top Nike fitness and specifically designed to help athletes of all levels get fitter, faster and stronger in the comfort of their own homes.

“‘Nike+ Kinect Training’ gives everyone access to the same training that we give our professional athletes. It merges our understanding of the greatest athletes in the world with the amazing sensor technology of Kinect for Xbox 360,” says Stefan Olander, vice president of Digital Sport at Nike. “‘Nike+ Kinect Training’ will make working out at home fun and inspiring, and with its seamless connection to two huge global communities in Xbox LIVE and Nike+, you’ll always find more motivation in someone to train with or challenge.”

“Nike+ Kinect Training” will utilize Nike trainers who work with some of the brand’s top athletes, including women’s soccer goalkeeper Hope Solo, in a tailored fitness session that assesses the body’s movements, physical strength and athleticism.

Other notable athletes that train at Nike’s facilities include Olympic track and field medalist Allyson Felix and NBA superstar Lebron James.

Interactive trainers will identify areas of improvement as they provide real-time feedback to make sure positions and routines are correct. The program, which features assessments every four weeks, evolves over time through individual progression.

To further the experience, users can participate in challenges and work out with friends via Xbox LIVE and the Nike+ community, as well as track workouts and send words of encouragement through a mobile app that’s currently being developed.

The video game will be released during the holiday season later this year.
