Gear

Editor’s Picks: May 28 – June 1

We're testing new running gear, the latest shoes & discussing our favorite nutrition products monthly. Here's what we're currently digging.

We’re never quite sure of how to feel about a four-day week after a holiday. On the one hand, the week goes by faster, on the other, it goes by slower. You know what we mean? But either way, we love that summer is now officially on its way, and with it, more outdoor activities and warm evening runs. This week, we’ve picked out a few of our favorite pieces of gear, nutrition and running apparel that are helping us get through these last few weeks of spring.

Apple Watch Series 3 – From $329

The nice thing about the Apple Watch Series 3  is that it comes with GPS and cellular, albeit at a $10/month fee. Most of us hate running with our phones, but when training, having our metrics available to us in the moment is important. Apple has made it easier for athletes to track their fitness from their wrist but also allows us to never miss a text, call or email. It’s even water resistant up to 50 meters. The battery life isn’t the greatest, thanks to its upgraded GPS and cellular features, but it’s still one of the best overall smartwatches on the market. We tried the 38mm Space Gray Aluminum Case with Black Sport Band and the Nike Sport Band. Both are good options for runners, but the Nike band has more breathability, which we enjoyed on longer (aka sweatier) runs.

Jasyoga Video – $9.99/month

Designed specifically for athletes, Jasyoga Video is an on-demand library of videos to help you with your running, cycling, triathlon, cross-training, balance and even pregnancy. The videos range anywhere from five to 30 minutes and cover a variety of topics including runner-specific issues. It’s also great for those with busy schedules who only have a small window of time to get a workout in.  “I’ve used a 10-minute hip mobility video to loosen up my hips after a run and snuck in a 30-minute core-strengthening session during my kids’ nap time on the weekend,” shared Bethany Mavis, Managing Editor of Women’s Running.

Nuun Immunity Hydration Tabs – $7.99/bottle

Last week, half of our office was feeling under the weather, causing the healthier half of us to stock up on immunity tablets to keep from getting sick. Nuun is a staple for most runners these days since its tablets come in four different categories: performance, electrolytes, vitamins and immunity. Thankfully, the latter tablets offer immune support that protects against cold and flu symptoms. And they worked! We jumped into Memorial Day weekend feeling happy and healthy. The blueberry tangerine flavor is also easier to get down versus some of its competitor brands, so that was a big plus.

MSR TrailShot Pocket-Sized Water Filter – $49.95

With the warmer weather, we’ve been getting in more trail runs in these last few weeks. If you’re an avid trail runner or ultrarunner, this pocket-sized water filter is a great product to add to your gear closet. The 5 oz. Trail Shot can filter one liter of water in about a minute so that you’re on your way quickly when your bottled water runs out. Since it fits in your pocket or running vest, it’s also an easy option for those who prefer to run light.

Brooks Run-Thru Unisex Hat – $28

This Brooks unisex hat is made with DriLayer stretch-woven fabric and include mesh inserts for ventilation. Even if you’re not usually a hat wearer, we think you may like this one. One editor said that his head never felt too hot while running and its fit was noticeably well-structured (when compared to other hats). He also had no issues getting it to feel secure on his head due to its adjustable back. It’s lightweight and therefore a good hat to throw into your gym back for days that start out gloomy but end in sunnier weather.
