With all the focus on Hansons-Brooks athlete Desiree Davila this past year (thanks to her second-place finish at the Boston Marathonin April), one fellow Rochester Hills, Michigan runner may be getting overlooked: Dot McMahan. A mother of a a two-year-old, Elizabeth, the 34-year-old McMahan is heading into the U.S. Olympic Trials in January with the 12th-fastest qualifying time.

At the Grandma’s Marathon this summer, McMahan put forth the best marathon of her career, clocking 2:3148 and taking a full three minutes off her PR.

Her season outside the marathoning realm has been equally impressive. Two weeks ago at the U.S. 10-Mile Championships, McMahan ran 55:39–good for ninth overall. Last May, she placed second at the U.S. 25K Championships.

“She’s making real steady progress,” said Keith Hanson, one of her coaches. “It’s a loaded field, but there’s a lot of things that can happen. Although it looks like there’s a field where three stand out, there’s a possibility where one or two might not choose to run, and it opens up the field for someone in Dot McMahan’s level.”
