Superb field will line up for exciting 8-lap race.
Alan Webb was slated to run the Invitational Mile at the New Balance Boston Indoor Grand Prix on Saturday, then he wasn’t, but the latest new from the Reggie Lewis Center says the American Record holder in the mile is back on board for what should be the most exciting indoor mile race on U.S. soil in quite some time.
Webb, who returned to action last summer after undergoing surgery on his Achilles tendon, most recently raced at the Silicon Valley Turkey Trot 5K on Thanksgiving, running 13:36 to edge out Oregon Track Club teammate Galen Rupp.
The invitational mile will be the final event of Saturday’s meet, and will feature Olympic silver medalist Nick Willis of New Zealand, U.S. Olympian and 3:50 miler Leo Manzano, as well as high school phenom Lukas Verzbicas, who will be attempting to be only the second U.S. prep to break 4 minutes for the mile indoors. The first? Webb, who turned in a 3:59.86 at the New Balance Games in New York in 2001.
