A mini-guide to everything you need to know about track & field at the London 2012 Games.

A mini-guide to everything you need to know about track & field at the London 2012 Games.

How it works: Over 10 days of competition a total of 47 gold medals will be up for grabs. The track & field competition in London is composed of 24 track events, 16 field events, two combined events and five road races, including the marathon and race walk. All five road events will finish on the Mall in central London, home of the finish to the iconic London Marathon, held each year in April.

The stage: The heart of the Olympic Park in Stratford, the 80,000-capacity Olympic Stadium.

Competition dates: August 3-12

Who’s hot: All eyes will undoubtedly be on Jamaican sprinting sensation Usain Bolt, the reigning Olympic champion in the 100 and 200 meters who is also the world-record holder in both events. On the distance side, Briton Mo Farah, the reigning world champion in the 5,000 meters, will be the hometown favorite and is his country’s best chance for gold.
