Washington D.C. Named ‘Nation’s Fittest City’

The American College of Sports Medicine compiled its annual American Fitness Index and determined through a variety of criteria that Washington D.C. is the fittest metropolitan area in the United States.

Washington D.C. was followed closely by Minneapolis-St. Paul and San Diego. The San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento rounded out the top five.

The index looks at measurable health and community indicators, including a variety of outdoor exercise options, low rates of smoking, obesity and diabetes, access to public parks, and more.

Among the findings by the ACSM:

  • There was a 11.3 percent drop in the percentage of individuals who exercised in the last 30 days.
  • There was a 5.5 percent drop in those who eat enough fruit each day.
  • On the bright side, there was a 9.5 percent decrease in respondents who reported being diagnosed with angina or heart disease.
  • There was a 5.5 percent increase in the number of park units from 2014 to 2015.
