He had placed second in the race the past two years.

Despite the fact he was stricken with food poisioning, serial marathoner Mike Wardian won the San Francisco Marathon last Sunday. His winning time was 2:27. Approximately 25,000 runners took to the streets in one of California’s most scenic cities, while over 100,000 spectators watched on. Organizers noted that 2,000 more entrants took part in this year’s marathon compared to last year.

For Wardian, the win was especially sweet, since he had come in second place the past two years.

“[It] doesn’t get much better than winning on a prestigious course like this,” Wardian said afterwards. “I hope I can come back next year and defend [my title].”

The Arlington, Virginia native noted that he was stricken with food posioning the night before the race and had considred not running it.

San Rafael-resident Alex Varner finished a distant second behind Wardian in 2:35.

Not one to shy away from a race, Wardian is constantly competing. Just a few weeks ago, he placed third in the grueling Badwater ultramarathon.
