One of the world’s most-capable distance runners was a no-show in a Kenyan court on Wednesday. Sammy Wanjiru, the 2008 Olympic gold medalist in the marathon, failed to appear before a judge after being charged with domestic assault. In December, Wanjru brandished an illegal assault rifle, striking a security guard and maid at his lavish residence. His wife, Triza Njeri, has accused him of threatening her life.

According to Wanjiru’s lawyer, the World Marathon Majors winner failed to appear, because he was ill and is nursing injuries sustained from a vehicle accident that occured two weeks ago.

The magistrate overseeing the trial, Alice Mong’are, castigated Wanjiru’s lawyer for not having his client in court.

“I know why I am setting this date and the council should not argue anymore.I order that the accused appear in court on the said date,” she said.

Wanjiru’s wife also failed to appear.

Police Chief Inspector John Ruto argued that Wanjiru is employing delaying tactics by disguising his illness.
