The 2014 suspension of top marathoner Rita Jeptoo, the reigning two-time champion of the Boston Marathon who tested positive for EPO, re-visited a hot topic in endurance sports: elite athletes and doping.
Shalane Flanagan was leading last year’s Boston Marathon and finished in 2:22:02, a time that would’ve won the race most years. But she was overtaken by Jeptoo late and eventually finished seventh.
We asked Flanagan about her attitude toward doping and the reality that she may not be competing on a level playing field—and how the Jeptoo news changed her attitude going forward.
