Vail Says He ‘Gave It All’ In The New York City Marathon

The leading American last weekend believes his race helped build character and mental toughness.

The top American male finisher in last week’s New York City Marathon was Ryan Vail, who came across the finish line in 2:13:23. The New York Road Runners’ Barbara Huebner recently posted a few quotes from Vail’s blog about his experiences during his New York debut.

Vail, who is currently taking time off to go hiking in Patagonia, says that he “gave it all that [he] had.”

“I believe races like this help build character and mental toughness,” he said.

After the race, Vail spoke about the 26.2-mile distance to the press. “I feel like I have a long way to go in the marathon,” he said. “I still have a lot to learn when it comes to racing and training. I’d like to try to get on maybe a faster course in the spring and see what I can do time-wise. But I’d also like to come back to New York and learn how to race better. I think there’s a lot of room for improvement in my race today.”
