Most people don’t think about running when they imagine penguins, but that’s not the case for ultra marathoner Dean Schuster. Last Saturday, he hopped on a treadmill at the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, South Carolina and hit the start button–not ending for 12 hours.
“I’ll get 50 miles in, maybe more,” said Schuster. “We’ll see.”
Schuster was putting on the feat to raise money for penguin conservation. Specifically, the charity is called “Running for Penguins”, which sponsors an Antarctic Marathon. Schuster signed up for the event in March.
“There were spots open for people who were interested in this cause, so I basically had to compete with others for the privilege of raising money to go,” said Schuster.
His daughter, Alyssa, was there to seem him running next to one of her favorite animals. “I’m proud of my dad for doing this and it’s cool how determined he is,” she said.
“He’s not really crazy, but he’s not normal either,” said Schuster’s son, Kai. “He’s like the perfect, awesome dad you’d want.”
