Most marathon finishes are places of elation and celebration, but this was not the case at the Philadelphia Marathon yesterday. Two men died of apparent heart attacks at the 26.2 mile race. One of the victims was a 21-year-old Asian male who collapsed at the finish, while the other was a 40-year-old white male who fell a quarter mile from the race’s end.

Both runners were taken to nearby Hahnemann University Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after.

Melanie Johnson, the race’s executive director expressed her grief at the news. “We are deeply saddened and our thoughts are with their family and friends,” she said. The names of the runners are being withheld pending notification of their families.

Meanwhile, ten other runners were rushed to the hospital by ambulance.

In the race itself, Mariska Kramer of the Netherlands won the women’s division in two hours, 35 minutes, and 46 seconds, while the men’s winner was Folisho Tuko in 2:19:14.
