On Nov. 17, thousands of runners will take to the streets of Philadelphia for that city’s annual marathon. Philly.com recently spoke with Ross Martinson, the owner of the Philadelphia Runner.
Martinson has finished in the top 20 in the prestigious Boston Marathon and owns an impressive 10-mile personal best of 48:58 that he logged at the Broad Street Run.
Martinson shares two tips for prospective Philly runners:
The first is to taper. “With 2 weeks to go, don’t try to cram in any training you might have missed,” he says. “It takes two weeks to benefit from a long run or workout, so resting your legs will help on race day more than anything else. No one ever feels they trained enough for the marathon.”
His second piece of advice is to take the 26.2-mile race one mile at a time. “At some point, the marathon will feel hard. Focusing on the current mile is easier than contemplating the next 6,” he says.
