Three NYRR Races Mark 10-Year Anniversary

Runner turnout in the Big Apple continues to rise.

Runner turnout in the Big Apple continues to rise.

Three New York City races hosted by the New York Road Runners are all celebrating a significant milestone: their 10th birthday this month.

Specifically, the races are the Scotland Run 10K (Saturday). On Sunday, the Colon Cancer Challenge 15k, 4-mile, and walk will be held. And next weekend is the More Magazine/Fitness Magazine Women’s Half-Marathon.

Though it may seem like the three races are linked in some way, they really are entirely diverse competitions. For example, the Scotland Run partners with the Scottish government. At the end of the 10k, runners get to watch the annual Tartan Parade, and fittingly, they are asked to wear kilts.

Turnout in this race has continued to grow. In 2003, a total of 2,371 finishers crossed the line, while last year it grew to nearly 8,000.

A week later, nearly the same number of women will turn out to Central Park to race the half at the More Magazine/Fitness Magazine Women’s Half-Marathon. At the front of the pack will be former Olympic marathon bronze medalist Deena Kastor.
