Long-time American distance runner Matt Tegenkamp was the first person to cross the finish line at the U.S. Championships over 10K last weekend.

Tegenkamp, who attended the University of Wisconsin and will be trying his hand in the marathon, clocked 28:25 and bettered Olympian Abdi Abdirahman by eight seconds. Third place went to Shadrack Biwott, who came across the line in 28:35.

The championships were held in conjunction with the prestigious AJC Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta. Running USA posted this race report of the event.

“It’s an honor to be a part of this great race,” said Tegenkamp, who is coached by Jerry Schumacher. “A lot of history is in this race and I am glad to be USA champion.”

Meanwhile, in the women’s race, Janet Cherobon-Bawcom prevailed with a 32:45. Stephanie Rothstein and Maegen Krifchin were second and third.

“The weather conditions today were a lot better than everyone expected,” Cherobon-Bawcom said.  “It’s been a beautiful day and we are all thankful for that.”
