Tariku Bekele Leads Great South Field

Kenenisa’s younger brother will square off against Abel Kirui.

The Bupa Great South Run, a 10-mile race, takes place in the United Kingdom on October 28.

Expected to compete for the win is one of the fastest Ethiopian runners currently competing: Tariku Bekele.

The younger of brother of Kenenisa (who is arguably one of the best long-distance runners ever), Tariku won the Olympic bronze medal in the 10,000m in London this year.

Also in the mix is Abel Kirui of Kenya, who won the silver in the Olympic Marathon.

Bekele’s 10-mile personal best is a blazing 46:40 that he set on the Great South course two years ago.

“It was touch and go whether Bekele would compete after feeling a hamstring strain in the recent Lisbon Half Marathon, but he has been given medical clearance to come to Portsmouth,” announced elite manager for the race, Peter Riley.

Kirui took second in the race last year behind Leonard Komen.

“Having won the last two World Championships titles then finishing second at the Olympic Games, he’s without a doubt the most consistent marathon runner about at the moment,” said Riley of Kirui.
