Strong American Field Headlines Boilermaker
Record number of runners expected for Sunday’s steamy summer classic in Utica.
Over 13,000 runners will take part in the 33rd Annual Boilermaker 15K Road Race on Sunday in Utica, New York, and the front of the field will be chock full of American athletes, led by former Yale All-American Lucas Meyer, who finished ninth overall in last year’s race.
Meyer, who who finished 24th at the Boston Marathon in April, will be looking to mix it up with some of the top international entrants, including Ridouane Harroufi of Morocco. He will have a tough task ahead of him, however, as African males have won every edition of the Boilermaker since 1992.
“It’s a strong field, consistent with all the PRRO races,” Dick Mattia, the race’s elite athlete coordinator, told Utica’s Boiler-Dispatch. “We have more Americans than ever. It’s because of people who have finished high in past races, plus new people who are running strong.”
