Storm Makes Central Park A Mess Before NYC Marathon

Over 1,000 trees were affected by the freakish weather.

In a normal year, with normal weather patterns, the logistics required to stage the ING New York City Marathon are amazing. This year, thanks to a freakish fall snow storm, pulling off one of the largest marathons in the world will require Herculean efforts.

According to a report on CBS News’ Web site, Central Park, the location for the last few miles of the race, is full of downed trees thanks to the storm that struck last weekend.

Only about an inch of snow fell on the park, but it was so wet and heavy it weighed down leaves and branches such that trees began to topple. Workers are now toiling around the clock to clear the mess.

Tourists at the park have been snapping pictures of the downed trees. “The park looks sad with all the trees down,” said Nathalie Pienoel, of the Normandy region of France. “But it’s also beautiful.”

The storm damaged half of the park’s 800 acres and may impact over 1,000 trees.
