Stephen Mokoka Wins Two Oceans Half

Ethiopian Biru Meseret Mengistu takes the women's crown.

Ethiopian Biru Meseret Mengistu takes the women’s crown.

Running on a year-old course, Stephen Mokoka won the Two Oceans Half Marathon in South Africa last weekend in 1:03:36.

Runner-up Lusapho April finished four seconds later, while Joel Mmone placed third in 1:03:45.

Mokoka ran a tactical race, choosing to trail in the back early on. He made his move when the pack began the tedious climb up Southern Cross Drive.

At that point, only April and Mmone could stick with him.

The women’s race went to an Ethiopian: Biru Meseret Mengistu, who broke the tape in 1:12:43. Irvette van Zyl and Rene Kalme placed second and third.

Fourth place went to Lavinia Haitope, while Christine Kalme was fifth.

Up to the 7K mark, Meseret Mengistu only held a 20-meter lead, but from there on out, she dropped the hammer. She established a 600m cushion by the finish over her closest competitor.
