Stephen Kiprotich Wins IOC Award

The Ugandan marathoner receives it for Olympic sportsmanship.

He’s won Olympic gold in the marathon, but that doesn’t mean Stephen Kiprotich is done winning medals. According to a report on the Daily Mirror website, the Ugandan was recently awarded the “special medal” by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The special recognition came from from Ugandan sports minister Charles Bakkabulindi.

The IOC special medal goes to athletes who excel in sports and demonstrate sportsmanship in Olympic events.

“I am very honored and humbled because I didn’t sweat for this medal,” Kiprotich said. “It could have been given to any other Olympian.”

Kiprotich upset a top-class field of Kenyans and Ethiopians at last summer’s Games to win the marathon with 5K to go.

His victory ended a 40-year drought of Olympic gold for Uganda.

“This is very special,” a smiling Kiprotich said.

Kiprotich’s winning time in London was 2:08:01. He prevailed in less-than-ideal conditions on a challenging Olympic course.
