Steeplechasers Shine At Youth Olympics
Scores of empty seats at inaugural international competition in Singapore.
At the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore on Thursday, it was the steeplechasers who stole the show.
Kenyan Virginia Nyambura won her heat in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, beating a field of 13 athletes in a time of 6:42.40. In the boys race, Ethiopia’s Fayisa Habtamu nipped Kenyan Peter Mutuku at the tape clocking 5:38.72 to Mutuku’s 5:38.72. Ugandan Zakaria Kiprotich was third at 5:44.51.
These inaugural Games have been marred by scores of empty seats at the track and field stadium and other venues, despite fans being told it was sold out.Organizers were left scurrying yesterday to try and address the attendance problems.
