Spanish Runner Defeats Patrick Makau

Makau is the current marathon world-record holder.

Makau is the current marathon world-record holder.

There was a big upset in Spain over the weekend as Spaniard Carlos Castillejo defeated Kenya’s Patrick Makau at the Mitja Maraton de Granollers, a half marathon that took place on Saturday.

Castillejo’s time was 62 minutes and 37 seconds, while Makau, who is the current world-record holder in the marathon (2:03:38) came across the line in 62 minutes and 40 seconds.

“Today’s has been my most important success to date,” said the 33-year-old Castillejo. “I’m a newcomer to the road events but I’m already used to them. My next target is the Spanish Cross Country championships (to be held in Gijón next month) and then I’ll kick off my build-up for the Olympic Marathon in London.”

Makau was gracious in defeat, saying, “He [Castillejo] has been a tough rival.”

The weather was cool with temperatures hovering near four degrees Centigrade.

Beatrice Chepchumba of Kenya won the women’s race in 1:12:42. Teammate Antonina Rutto came across the line one second later.

Over 19,000 runners took part in the race.
