Marathon runner Guor Maker, who competed at the London Olympics under the Olympic flag, has signed with an agent a year after he became a U.S. citizen.

A South Sudan native, Maker qualified for the London Games at the 2011 Twin Cities Marathon with a time of 2 hours, 14 minutes, 32 seconds. In 2012, a mere six weeks before the London Olympics, he registered a 2:12:55 at the San Diego Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon.

Since there was not an Olympic committee in South Sudan, the IOC allowed Maker — formerly known as Guor Marial — to run in London without an official nation behind him. He finished 47th.

“One of my goals is to become among the world’s best marathoners,” Maker said in a press release. “I felt I needed a knowledgeable agent to achieve that goal. That is when I came across Christopher Mengel and Elite Runner Management. The vision of his agency in supporting athletes is exactly what I am looking for as my running career continues.”

Elite Runner Management is based in Michigan, although Maker will train in Kenya for the time being. He has elected to run without a coach.

Maker said he feels fortunate to be a U.S. citizen and wants to help his native country.

“Being a South Sudanese and United States citizen means a lot to me,” Maker said. “It gives me the full rights of a person to speak, to vote, to be free. My heart breaks when I see the civil strife that is happening in South Sudan right now. Other than my own running career, it is my hope to help others by bringing clean drinking water to my people in Ruweng County in Unity State, South Sudan.”
