Smooth Sailing For Boston Marathon Registration

No glitches reported as new process for qualified registrants gets underway.

Registration for the widely popular 116th Boston Marathon opened four days ago and things continue to be smooth sailing for qualified registrants—a relief to race directors after last year’s computer glitches that left many would-be Boston marathoners in the dust when registration filled in just eight hours.

Registration opened Monday, Sept. 12 at 10 a.m. (EST) and will close tomorrow, Friday, Sept. 23 at 5 p.m. (EST). This year’s registration process is “rolling admission,” allowing only the fastest marathoners the opportunity to sign up so far. On the first day of registration only those who beat their age and gender qualifying time by 20 minutes or more could register. Yesterday morning, those who beat their respective qualifying time by at least 10 minutes got their opportunity to register and tomorrow registration opens up to those runners who met the standard by at least five minutes. Only if space allows will registration re-open on Monday to the remaining qualifiers.

According to the Metro West Daily News, the Boston Athletic Association will not release daily updates on the amount of bibs remaining.

More than 26,000 people are expected to run the Boston Marathon on Patriots’ Day 2012 and approximately 500,000 spectators will line the course of the oldest and, possibly, most well-known marathons in the world.
