According to race officials from last weekend’s Honolulu Marathon, there’s a distinct possibility a world record was broken there. No it wasn’t involving Kenyans or Ethiopians. In this case it involved a 92-year-old woman, Gladys “Glady” Burrill, who finished the Honolulu Marathon. She may be the oldest person to ever complete the 26.2-mile race. In the Guinness Book Of World Records, the previous oldest finisher was Jenny Wood-Allen, 90, who completed the 2002 London Marathon in 11 hours.

Burrill completed hers in under 10 hours (9:53:16). According to a news article on the KITV.com Web site, Burrill began running marathons when she was 86 years old. She has finished five Honolulu marathons, but was unable to finish the last two.

She is from Prospect, Oregon, but owns a condominium in Waikiki.

In order to prepare for this year’s race, she put in 30-50 miles a week of training with her running partner, George McCarthy.

Honolulu Marathon race officials are working with the Guinness Book of World records to officially certify the record.
