Even though he’s technically tried out the marathon (he had to stop running at 35K in his first one), Kenyan-born Shadrack Biwott is calling next weekend’s ING New York City Marathon his first “real” attempt at 26.2 miles.

“It didn’t go very well,” he said of his first attempt at this year’s Los Angeles Marathon where he ran 2:20:28. “It was miserable…But you know, that’s past now. I’m trying to let that go and have positive thinking. I’m getting ready and getting excited every day. It’s going to be fun.”

For the upcoming marathon next weekend, Biwott says he just wants to do well. “I want to really put myself in the best position that will get me ready to perform to my potential,” he admits. “Whatever that means. I don’t want to lock myself into this mindset where I say I need to run this time – because there are so many things that you can’t really control.”

Biwott lives in Eugene, Oregon and runs for the prestigious Oregon Track Club.
