Serhiy Lebid Going For 10th XC Title

He has dominated the European cross-country circuit for decades.

He has dominated the European cross-country circuit for decades.

Ukrainian distance-running ace Serhiy Lebid isn’t letting his age get in the way. At 37, Lebid is attempting to win this 10th European Cross-Country title.

The championships take place on December 3 in Budapest.

Since 1994, Lebid is the only athlete to have competed in every annual championship. However, last year’s race was not a good one for him as he dropped out near the 7.5K mark of the 10K race.

At the time he had this to say about his DNF, “I felt I could not improve, I was, at that time, running at around 15th or 16th position. The podium was too far away for me.”

According to a report on the European Athletics Web site, Lebid has been meticulously planning for this year’s race.

“In October I began my special preparation in a training camp in Evpatoria and now I’m training in Kislovodsk, [which is] my annual altitude preparation before the champs.”

Lebid’s amazing streak of wins began in 1998.
