Semenya Will Return To Competition Next Thursday
South African woman slated to race for the first time since last summer’s World Championships.
Caster Semenya, the reigning world champion in the women’s 800 meters who was recently cleared to compete by the International Association of Athletics Federations after a year-long gender debate, will return to competition at the Lappeenranta Games — a low-key meet in Finland — next Thursday.
“We have a long history with her manager and he felt that the Lappeenranta Games is nice because it’s not too big but there are enough international athletes,” Jarmo Viskari, a spokesman for the Lappeenranta Games, told the UK’S Daily Telegraph. “We are now expecting a lot of spectators.”
Semenya, who will not compete at the World Junior Championships in Canada at the end of July, is hoping to contest the African Championships beginning on July 28 in Kenya.
