Kenya’s Sammy Kitwara prevailed at the World’s Best 10K last Sunday in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Along with stiff competition, the 25-year-old was up against brutal headwinds in the first third of the race.
Accordingly, his winning time was 28 minutes and five seconds, which was the slowest winning time since 2008.
However, Kitwara’s victory made him the first person to win the race three times.
“My goal today was the win, without focusing on a specific time. I noticed the group began to slow down and I knew it was the right time to break away. I sped up until I managed to lead alone,” he said.
