Russia took one more step closer to finalizing preparations for the forthcoming IAAF World Championships in Athletics last Saturday.

Officials successfully held the annual Russian Marathon Championships on the same course that will be used when the world championships take place in August.

The women’s marathon is scheduled for Aug. 10, while the men’s race will be contested on Aug. 17.

The first 600 meters of the race are on the rubberized track in Luzhniki Stadium. At that point, competitors will complete four laps alongside the Moskva River, at which time runners will route back to the Stadium where they will run the final 300 meters in the stadium.

At the Russian Championships over the weekend, 21-year-old Artyom Aplachkin prevailed in 2:15:23. The women’s title went to  Marina Kovalyova, who clocked 2:35:03 for the 26.2-mile distance.
