Already the American record holder in the 10,000 meters outdoors, Galen Rupp established the American indoor record in the 3,000m on Friday with his winning time of 7:30.18 at the IAAF XL Galan Indoor Meeting in Stockholm. The time was also a meet record and the fastest time in the world this year.
The time betters Bernard Lagat’s previous American best of 7:32.48, which he set in 2007, by more than two seconds. Rupp’s record comes five days after Lagat took back the American record in the two-mile from Rupp during the 106th edition of the Millrose Games.
Rupp, the 2012 Olympic silver medalist in the 10,000m, also holds the fastest time in the world in the mile this season. He is a two-time Olympian and is coached by Alberto Salazar. He currently lives and trains in Portland Oregon with teammate and friend Mo Farah, who is a double Olympic gold medalist (5000m/10,000m) for Great Britain. Additionally, Rupp was a gold medalist in the Pan American Junior Championships 5000m back in 2003.
