Rupp Is Great; Fernandez May Be Better
Oklahoma State’s German Fernandez capped a brilliant freshman year by winning the NCAA Championships men’s 1500 meters Saturday afternoon.
Taking nothing away from Oregon’s Galen Rupp, who probably just completed the best year by a distance runner in NCAA history, it’s interesting to note that while Rupp did not break four minutes in the mile or win an NCAA championship title until his senior season (after delaying his initial enrollment at the University of Oregon by one year after high school), German Fernandez ran a 3:55.09 mile indoors and has now won his first NCAA title as a true freshman who did not even turn 18 until November.
