Run With The Lions At The Safaricom Marathon

The race benefits community development in Kenya.

When one thinks of running a marathon, one usually doesn’t conjure up images of running in an African wildlife refuge. This is the case for Kenya’s “Safaricom Marathon”. The event, launched in 2009, will be held on June 25 in the idyllic Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. The proceeds from the race go to support “community development” in Kenya.

Last year’s race raised a record 47 million Kenyan shillings (about $560,000).

“We are extremely delighted by the continued success of this unique event and we are happy to lend it our name and support,” announced the race CEO Bob Collymore. “Its founding mantra of running for a cause is well-aligned with our own pillars of community engagement, support and sustainability. We are glad that the Safaricom Marathon continues to make a real positive difference in the lives of Kenyans.”

Participants not wishing to run the marathon can instead take part in the race’s other venues: the half marathon and a children’s 5K fun run.

A total of 1,150 runners took part in last year’s race.
