Rudisha Won’t Run Commonwealth Games

The new 800-meter world-record holder is tired after a long season.

Citing fatigue, Kenya’s David Rudisha has decided not to compete in next month’s Commonwealth Games to be held in Delhi, India.

“I started my season early and was in shape, running 1:43 by February, and I maintained it until September,” Rudisha said. “I believe I need time to rest and focus on next year.”

Rudisha recently broke the world record in the 800 meters, running 1:41.09 two Sunday’s ago to eclipse Wilson Kipketer’s record which stood for 13 years. This past Sunday, Rudisha knocked another eight one hundredths of a second off his week-old mark, running 1:41.01. He will compete one last time this season at the IAAF Challenge Cup in Croatia this weekend before taking a break to recharge for next summer’s World Championships and the following summer’s Olympic Games.

“I need to go away after Split, maybe for two months,” Rudisha said. “Next year has the World Championship and then we have the Olympics. I want to be in top form for both events.”
