Rudisha Headlines African Championships
World-leading Kenyan will face a stiff challenge in loaded men’s 800 meters.
David Rudisha, who ran the third fastest 800 meters in history with a 1:41.5 clocking at the Heusden meeting in Belgium just a few weeks ago, is the main attraction at the 17th CAA African Athletics Championships that get underway Wednesday at the Nyayo stadium in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi.
Looking to steal Rudisha’s thunder will be the reigning world champion over two laps, Mbulaeni Mulaudzi of South Africa, who has come up short against Rudisha three times already this season. In other highly-anticipated action, reigning world 5,000-meter champion Vivian Cheruiyot of Kenya will be challenged by Ethiopia’s Meseret Defar, multiple world and Olympic medalist at the distance, in the women’s 5,000 meters.
The distance races, as they usually are at this meet, will be fiercely competitive, as top athletes from all over Africa will do battle for bragging rights on their home turf.
