Richmond Marathon Benefits From NYC Cancellation

The half marathon is now sold out.

The half marathon is now sold out.

Even though the cancellation of the NYC Marathon was upsetting for thousands of runners, there is a small silver lining: many other marathons around the country are filling up and even selling out thanks to in-shape New York runners who want to test their fitness.

According to an article posted on the BizJournals Web site, the Richmond Marathon is enjoying record participation in its 35-year history.

Held on November 10, the Richmond race will have 6,500 participants–hundreds of which were New York City Marathon runners.

We believe there was a direct correlation to the close of the New York Marathon,” said race director Lisa Randolph. “We were up to about 700 registered over the weekend.”

Last Friday, the half marathon sold out and there are still 560 spots (as of Monday) available for the marathon.

Race officials are scrambling to prepare for the increased turnout and have announced that some changes will be implemented, such as mailing out finisher medals instead of handing them out on race day.
