British runner Paula Radcliffe just may be remembered as the best women’s distance runner of all time.
On April 13, 2003, she clocked a stunning time of 2:15:25 at the London Marathon.
That amazing time knocked nearly two minutes off her previous best.
Since then, no one has come close to Radcliffe’s record. The nearest competitor is Russia’s Lilya Shobukhova, who ran a 2:18:20 two years ago in Chicago.
“I definitely thought that it would be challenged a lot more, but at the same time the closing stages of the race I was very conscious of the fact that I’d already beaten the record but I wanted to make it as tough as I possibly could so it would stand for as long as possible,” Radcliffe said. “In that respect, the fact that it has stood for 10 years is something that I’m proud of.”
Radcliffe is currently 39 and has been sidelined due to a persistent foot injury.
