Some 10,000 runners took part in the annual Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon & Half Marathon on Sunday morning. The men’s marathon winner was Ethiopia’s Abiyot Endale, who broke the tape in 2:18:35. Sage Canaday of Boulder, Colo., was second in 2:22:15, while two-time defending champion Mario Macias, of Manitou Springs, Colo., placed third in 2:22:22. In the women’s race, Aregash Abate won in 2:48:29. Bonnie Axman of San Diego was second in 2:50:40, while Jacqui Giuliano of Oakwood Hills, Illinois was third in 2:54:16.
In the half marathon, Stephen Sambu of Kenya defended his title, crossing the line in 1:02:13. Tesfaye Alemayehu was second in 1:06:18, while Rodgers Ondati took third in 1:08:10. Natasha Labeaud Anzures of San Diego won the women’s race in a personal best 1:14:17, ahead of Heather Jackson, who was second in 1:16:33. Cate Robbie of Boulder, Colo., was third in 1:19:16.
Competitor magazine associate editor Caitlyn Pilkington took over four minutes off her previous personal best for 13.1 miles, crossing the finish line in 1:36:16.
