Rupp, Conley Win 10K Titles

Rupp now has an historic six national 10K championships.

Galen Rupp and Kim Conley won the men’s and women’s 10,000m titles at the USA Track & field Championships Thursday.

For Rupp, it was an historic sixth straight national title in the event, a streak that dates back to 2009. He was previously tied with Frank Shorter, who also had five 10K wins. Rupp clocked in at 28:12.07 Thursday.

“You know, I was trying to run as easy as possible,” Rupp said. “I’m still planning on running Paris, so I didn’t want to make it any harder than it needed to be.”

Conley, meanwhile, earned her first national title with her 32:02.07 effort. The 28-year-old California native kicked with 200 meters to go and crossed the line first as hundreds of supporters cheered for her in the stands.

“It is so meaningful, I can’t even begin to describe it,” said Conley, a resident of West Sacramento. “To win my first title here, with the Sacramento Running Association here and the whole Sacramento running community, it’s just perfect.”
