New Balance was founded in 1906 and has been making athletic footwear for the past 75 years. It’s the only athletic shoe manufacturer that makes a portion of its products in the U.S. As of 2015, it employs about 1,300 people who produce 4 million pairs of shoes annually in its five U.S. manufacturing facilities—one in Boston, one in Lawrence, Mass., and three in Maine.
